Convention Chair: Don Kaiser PDF Print E-mail
Don Kaiser

Don first became a fan when he took a Science Fiction course in high school English and read “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury (among other books) in 1972.  Throughout high school and college he continued to read science fiction and fantasy books nearly exclusively.  He continues to read science fiction and fantasy books and is especially fond of short fiction, and has been an active participant in the North Country Gaylaxians monthly book discussions for many years.

Don started being active in fandom in the mid 1980s attending his first convention “Minicon 18” in 1984.  Since then he has attended numerous conventions in the Twin Cities.  He sponsored Gaylaxian room parties at Minicon for several years in the early and mid 1990s and helped organize (and moderate) panels of GLBT interest at that same time.  He attended his first WorldCon (NoLaCon II) in 1988 and has attended 5 others since, volunteering at all them.

Don started playing D&D in college soon after the game was released and has been an avid gamer ever since, both role-playing and board games.  In the late 1980s Don ran Tékumel games, which published ancillary materials from Professor M.A.R. Barker’s Tékumel roll playing world.  During that time Don attended many large game conventions (including GenCon as both a dealer and a judge).

In 2001 Don started volunteering on the con committee of Diversicon.  In 2002 Don was deputy-programming head and in 2003 & 2004 Don headed programming.  Although a small con in numbers, Diversicon has three tracks of programming for an entire weekend (typically running between 65 and 75 programming items in the weekend) and in know for its high participation rate (we usually had 30 -35% of attendees on one or more panels).  Don also regularly attends CONvergence and volunteers in the Masquerade and as a panel moderator.

In 2004 Don attended his first Gaylaxicon in San Diego and also attended in Boston in 2005 and Washington DC in 2008, volunteering significant hours at each convention. He also volunteered to be a reader/judge for the short fiction category of the Spectrum Awards in 2004 and 2005.

Professionally Don has worked with small start up companies for over 20 years and is highly experienced in organization, running meetings and keeping projects on track.

Gaming: Burl Zorn PDF Print E-mail

Burl ZornBurl Zorn has been involved in the gaming community since 1981. He has been both an avid roleplayer for the last two and a half decades. He pretty much sticks to all of the various versions of Dungeons and Dragons, but has been known to play almost any roleplaying game set before him.

He's been a fan of board games since he was a child in the 60's, occasionally designing games to entertain his three younger sisters as they moved across the country in the whirlwind lifestyle of the military brat. As an adult he has only designed one, which was given to a friend of his as a birthday present. It was well received, but dealt with his friend's short movie career in Muskie Madness and his personal life, so was probably only entertaining to people who actually knew the subject of the game.

The first game he ran at a convention was due only to a game master not showing up and him volunteering to run a module that he had just picked up. That went well and he has been running games at various conventions and game stores since. At most of the conventions, he runs an ongoing Dungeons and Dragons campaign and offers many board games for people to play and enjoy.

Conventions he has attended and run game rooms or games at include: Con of the North, Gencon, Convergence, Twincon, Recon, Marscon, and Ares Con to name a few.

He opened a game store in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin with Margaret Weis called the Game Guild in 1995 which did very well for the first few years, but started to fail as a result of its' largest customer base (TSR) being bought out by Wizards of the Coast and shipping out to Seattle. He then moved back to Minnesota to be closer to his mother who was fighting MS and continues to carry on that battle to this day!

He has been working at Source Comics & Games, one of the largest game stores in the country, for the last 10 years of his life, coercing friends and customers alike to buy lots of games that they tend to have a very good time with.

He's started a game night at a local coffee shop, Ginkgo's, on Mondays that all are welcome to attend and has been going strong for 2 years now.

He is ready to host a gaming room and is looking for any requests for games that people may like to have going. He has a host of people to draw from to supply almost any gaming request. Just let him know!

Registration: Claudia P Slovacek PDF Print E-mail

Claudia P SlovacekClaudia has been involved on a peripheral level with local and national conventions for the past 18 or so years. She was on the Minicon Programming Committee in the early 90s and organized several panels both at Minicon and CONvergence. She has attended many Diversicons, and several WorldCons, Wiscons and last year's Gaylaxicon.

For the first four years of CONvergence, Claudia organized an entire hotel floor around the local leather scene as it related to Speculative Fiction fans. This involved coordinating closely with the hotel liaison and operations department to ensure a safe environment. In Minnesota, there is a large crossover between the two communities and has been for decades. We experienced a veritable con within a con.

More recently, she was appointed the Programming Chair for the 2007 Leather Leadership Conference, hosted by the Twin Cities in April 2007. In conjunction with that, she attended several national leather conventions in the last decade, from New Orleans to St. Louis to San Francisco to New York City.

In all of these activities, she has been observant about the registration process – what worked and what didn’t. She keeps a mental note file about the 30+ conventions attended over the years. These skills will assist her in running an efficient registration process for Gaylaxicon 2009.

Currently Claudia is involved in two monthly book clubs – one started in 1990, focusing on women authors, and the second, the local North Country Gaylaxian Bookclub that was started several years ago. She maintains the book lists for both clubs – updating them periodically and sending out announcements about future selections.

Claudia was a judge for the short story category for the Spectrum Awards in 2005 and 2008. She looks forward to meeting you all at the registration desk in October.

Registration Sub-Head: Robert Schug PDF Print E-mail

I’m actually kinda new to the who SciFi convention thing. I’ve been to CONvergence twice and it looks like I’ll be taking on the party room organization there. In real life I’m a grad student. I got my MBA 2 months ago and started my second masters 2 weeks later. I’m currently getting a Masters of Project Management.

In the past I’ve been an Executive Administrative Support type person thingy. I’ve organized mass trainings and other major events in the past so this kind of job is not unfamiliar to me.

I’m will be celebrating 17 years with my husband, Steven, this coming month. We’re slowly restoring a Victorian home built in 1886 in the Midway section of St Paul.  I’ve also been going to the MN Renaissance Festival for 16 years with my husband. My website for the festival is http://mrffriends.tripod.com

I’m originally from TX but have lived in NY, IA, and LA to boot. Been here since 1992. I’m 5’7”, 230#,… oh wait, you didn’t want that kind of a bio did you? Never mind…

For hobbies, I study ancient Egypt. I love to sew and make costumes (You can see some at http://mrffriends.tripod.com/pages_people/schug_costumes.html). I read extensively, including a lot of sword and sorcery, just can’t get enough of that. The Lord of the Rings was what started it all.  I love to travel, been to England twice, Scotland once, and the last big one was 18 days, including Easter, in Italy 2 years ago. Next trip is Paris in 2010. I’ve been all over the U.S.

Public Relations: Jason Tucker PDF Print E-mail

Jason's first sci-fi convention was a Doctor Who convention in 1985. Six years later, he attended his first Minicon, jumping into the deep end of the convention pool. As far as conventions go, he's been a lost cause ever since. Currently, he attends about six or seven a year, including local general sci-fi cons, comic book cons, and regional Doctor Who conventions. Next year, he's planning on attending his first anime con, and looks forward to Gaylaxicon coming back to the Twin Cities sometime in the future.
